Chapter 11

If Avery thought Isabelle couldn't surprise her again, she found out she was very wrong. Isabelle showed up at her place that evening before dinner time in cargo shorts and a tank top, a cloth shopping bag in hand.

Avery leaned against the door and glanced at the bag. In a way, she was glad Isabelle assured her the date would happen right there in Ashland. A day at the water park left her pleasantly exhausted and not really interested in going anywhere else.

“Okay, it's your choice,” Isabelle said as she sauntered in like she owned the place. “Do you want to eat or have fun first?”

“Well, I’m still pretty full from lunch, so let’s do the fun stuff first.”

“Then I just need to store this in the fridge.” Isabelle lifted the bag a bit and glanced around the apartment. “I take it the kitchen is that way.”

Rather than respond, Avery just followed her and leaned against the doorway, while Isabelle put containers of food in her refrigerator. “You certainly do assume a lot of things.”

“I don’t think of it as making assumptions, so much as being confident. There’s nothing wrong with that.” Isabelle finished tucking the food away, then straightened and folded the cloth bag. “For my next trick, I’m going to show you something I bet you’ve never done before.”

Now Avery couldn’t help but let Isabelle see her response – an eye roll toward her ceiling. She considered herself a pretty worldly woman. “Please. What could that possibly be?”

The way Isabelle grinned, Avery knew she thought she had her. Until she spoke. “We’re going treasure hunting.”

“I...” Avery glanced around the apartment. “You want to search for treasure in Nebraska, of all places? I hate to break it to you, but pirates didn’t come this far inland. I think you miss L.A. more than you’re willing to let on.”

Isabelle chuckled and reached out to take Avery’s hand. That warm sensation of soft skin against hers made Avery shudder and, the next thing she knew, her lips were pressed to Isabelle’s. It wasn’t intentional. At least, she didn’t think so. But anytime a woman was in her apartment, they were here for one thing and one thing only.

The response she felt was immediate, Isabelle’s arms curling around her neck to draw her as close as possible. It would be so easy to just turn her around and start moving her toward the bedroom, to escalate the kiss beyond the sweet meeting of lips.

Already, her hands were on Isabelle’s sides, drifting over the outer curves of her breasts. Yes, they could take this further right now. When Avery traced her thumbs up over Isabelle’s nipples, she could feel the stiff buds through the fabric of her shirt and bra. They both wanted it. They could both give in right here and now...

But something stopped Avery, something that felt like desire and uncertainty all wrapped into one uncomfortable ball that settled in her stomach. She broke the kiss and blinked, lowering her hands and dropping her gaze down to the floor.
